2008-2009 Field Trips

Since field trips may have to be canceled or moved to other dates for a variety of reasons please sign up for the trips ahead of time or contact Ed for information before arriving at the trip sites.

 If you would like to have updates about field trips sent to you by e-mail, please contact Ed at the above e-mail address and he will add you to the field trip up-date list.

On all field trips; dress for the weather, wear comfortable walking or hiking shoes. Bug spray is sometimes useful, bring water, snacks or lunch if you so desire, and don’t forget your binoculars, scopes and field guide.


September 20, Saturday: Dismal Swamp State Park, NC
This bird watching trip will be guided by ranger Signa Williams, who will also present a slide presentation. Meet at 7 a.m. at the park. The park is located on US Route 17, on the way to Elizabeth City, next to the NC Visitors Center. There are signs to guide you. The park encompasses 17,000 acres. Bring water, bug spray, and snacks. There are no facilities after leaving the visitors center. The tour will last a half-day through lunch. Sign up early. Trip is limited to only 18.


October 11, Saturday: Mackey Island NW, NC

Saturday: Meet at the Bloom Grocery Store parking lot at the intersection of Princess Anne Road and Sandbridge Road at 7:30 a.m. We will go the Charles Kuralt Overlook first, then to the grocery store on Knotts Island if there is a need. There are no facilities after the grocery store.


November 22 : Saturday: Craney Island - Hoffler Creek

Meet at the Bloom Grocery Store parking lot at the intersection of Princess Anne Road and Sandbridge Road at 7:30 a.m. Take the Cedar Road exit north from Route 168, turn left on River Shore Road, turn right on Hedgerow Lane, follow it behind the apartments to gate. From there we will go to Hoffler Creek.


December 13: Saturday: Colchester Road - Whitehurst Tract

Meet at 7:30 AM at the Bloom Grocery Store at Sandbridge Road and Princess Road. From there we will carpool for this half-day excursion. Plans may include lunch together at a nearby location.


January 17: Saturday: Eastern Shore Daytrip

Meet at 7:30 AM at the parking lot at the Bay Bridge Tunnel. From there we will carpool for this full day excursion. First stop is at Kiptopeake Stae Park. Plans may include lunch together at a nearby location.We will continue on to Chincoteague, where we will drive the Assateague Island wildlife loop and visit adjacent birding sites. Those desiring to stay overnight will need to arrange their own accomodations.


February 21: Saturday: Railroad Ditch, Dismal Swamp NFW, (tentative date)

NWR Visitors Center address is 3100 Desert Road, Suffolk, VA 23434.

Meeet at 7:45 AM at the Railroad Ditch entrance, which is about 1000 feet past the Dismal Swamp Visitors Center. It is a 12 round mile trip to Lake Drummond and back. We will be on our own, as I have the code for the lock on the gate. If desired, we could also go to the Jericho Ditch.

March 14: Saturday: First Landing State Park

Meet at the Visitors Center parking lot, which is on Shore Drive at 8:00 a.m.

We will do some of the trails and possibly the banding station.


April 18: Saturday: Merchants Millpond State Park, Sunbury, North Carolina

Meet at the Canoe Launch Area at 8:00 a.m. Floyd Williams will lead the tour. Bring a bag of sugar as a donation for the hummingbird feeders that he maintains at his house. If you need directions, call Ed at Home: 301-7231or Cell: 404-5088.


May 09: Saturday: Henricus Historical Park, Chester, Virginia

Meet at Hardee's, 1901 West Hundred Road, Chester, Va. It is at the corner of Route 10 and Old Stage Road, North of Route 10.

The park overlooks the James River and is next to Dutch Gap. There are non-tidaal wetlands along Old Stage Road before you arrive at the park. There is a boardwalk, located at the river, that takes you down to the river level and goes into the marsh. The park is approximately 110 miles from Pembroke Mall, depending on which way you travel. Last year we ate lunch at a real nice Italian restaurant that Linda Anderson and Andrea Bell found.


12th Annual Maury Jackson Birders Breakfast Saturday,May 16th: Princess Anne Country Club, VB, VA

Meet at 5:45 am at the front parking lot of the PAC Club on Pacific Avenue ,for a guided tour through the course with expert birders. At 8 am we will have Gourmet Buffet Breakfast in the Lake James Room of the country club.

Please register early so that a precise count can be presented to the facilities. A cost of $30.00 applies.
